Today, Check Engine Light came up on my Mazda 3 (2.3L 5dr Hatch). Called the dealer, and they said it is quite common on new Mazda 3. They asked me to tighten gas cap more than 3 clicks every time I fill up. Weired, I always do one click only on my VW Passat and Honda CRV. No problem fo 3 and 6 yrs. Mazda 3 ----> 2 months ???

I also checked on several Mazda Forums on the net, and found same problem on a lot of people. They said Mazda had set some parameter too close to ???. Basically, no tolerance (in my Enigneering term). There is an update from Mazda already, so I will take my car to dealer tomorrow. Hope it is just a setting issue, not a real one.

Wow, sounds great to me. I mean... sorry for your problem but to me, no tolerance sounds cool. Something like a more delicate design.

If what you told us was correct, then twist it few more click is not an issue for me at all.

Please let us know if you have the clear analysis or answer for this.

Thanks for the translation. But some words sound TAMANG TAMANG. 555.
The gas cap thing is to keep certain pressure inside gas tank. If the pressure is out of the limit, then CEL (Check Engine Light) will be on.

There are a lot of things that can cause this CEL to lit up. If this light is flashing, then it is a REAL BIG problem. My case is solid light, no flashing.

Generally, this is not that strange problem as most modern cars'diagnosis systems are much more sensitive when compared to those older machines.

What need to be concerned should be whether we can find the problem, If we can ... I think it should be fine

However, I have been told that those "too sensitive" can be replaced without any surcharges after the manufacturer has produced better one. Just FYI, not so sure

Went to my dealer today to fix this CEL problem and noise on steering wheel. They have to replace fuel (gas) cap and place an order for a special part for the steering wheel. All at no charge.

So, now no CEL comes up, but still noisy steering wheel. They also washed my car - free. I think it's free car wash every service done at dealer - same as VW, but not Honda. Special part will be here within two weeks It should be same time for my first oil change (3000 miles).

I also bought two accessories - rear bumper pads and cargo liner tray. They both made from rubber. Will post pictures when available.

Personal comment...

Real bumper pads are very useful but most problematic for me because it's hard to make it looks great 'with' the car unless it is factory design.

But there is no cargo tray for 4dr. Only cargo mat (carpet). The fuel-filler door is also available for 4dr, and cost around US$ 108.-

Another goody, 2 weeks ago Mazda sent me a bottle of touch-up paint macting my car's color - sunlight metallic silver - free of charge. Cool !
