Dear Colleagues,
The tsunami of December 26, 2004, changed the world. This horrifying natural catastrophe left over 150,000 dead and devastated the coasts of many countries in South and Southeast Asia. And its terrible impact reached far beyond the region itself. Victims are being mourned throughout the world, and the global outpouring of shock and sympathy is unprecedented. Reflecting this, governments, institutions, individuals and companies everywhere have been responding with aid in every form. This global solidarity is especially welcome and necessary in view of the sheer dimensions of the disaster.
Your donations around the world also testify to this. We have already received hundreds of thousands of euros in the special bank accounts we set up in many countries. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your concern and generosity. As you know, we will match every euro that you donate. The head of Siemens India, Jürgen Schubert, will administer the use of this fund and support specific projects in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia in order to help alleviate the most pressing needs as quickly as possible. In this way, our aid will be directed to where it is needed the most. We will keep you informed about these projects on our intranet under "Siemens today" (
http://siemenstoday.cc.siemens.com). We have also set up a discussion forum (
http://intranet.cc.siemens.de/forum/forum.jsp?forum=38) in which we will compile and evaluate your ideas and - as far as possible - implement them.
My very special thanks go to our many colleagues in the affected countries who quickly and courageously gave help - in particular technical help - where needed. With the technical support of Siemens experts, the countries have begun to restore their power, telecommunications and water infrastructure. In addition, we have been providing medical equipment to hospitals. And, in cooperation with the German army, we supplied medical equipment like x-ray and ultrasound systems for the hospital planes used to transport the injured as well as for the German naval ships stationed in the region.
Including these donations in kind, we have already made available well over one million euros. And we will increase this amount if needed. As far as local technical help is concerned, we - like no other company in the world - can now draw on the benefits of our strong local presence to help in such an extraordinary situation. With our local offices and our local experts, we have our own possibilities of offering concrete help on the spot. And we took action immediately following the catastrophe.
Naturally our commitment won't be limited to helping communities overcome the immediate problems. The people of South and Southeast Asia must not be left alone in the longer phase of restoring their infrastructure and rebuilding their lives. Our fundamental principle is: "We are here to stay." And we will now underscore this commitment in India, in Sri Lanka, in Indonesia, in Thailand and in Malaysia. We will be focusing on so-called Public Private Partnerships. We want to work together with the afflicted countries to coordinate and bundle our efforts. We want to give assistance that will be enduring and bring lasting improvements in the lives of the people. We will keep you updated on these efforts as well.
Once again, my heartfelt thanks to all who have helped the people in need.
With my best regards,
Heinrich v. Pierer
